Frequently Asked Questions

What You Need to Know

We understand that you have questions about this project so here are some of the common questions and answers we’ve been asked.

Which giraffe subspecies is Zenda?

South Africa is home to only one specific species of giraffe: the Southern Giraffe.

Are the proposed giraffes genetically compatible?

When it comes to human or animal reproduction there’s no guarantee of success. The two giraffe have been picked specifically for sex/age so that they will form a compatible herd,

Is there a formal breeding plan for the future?

There’s no formal breeding plan in place for the future. But many wildlife reserves across South Africa come together to collaborate in breeding endangered species.

Is this going to be recognised by conservation authorities?

Libran Wildlife Reserve is a registered wildlife reserve that is overseen by the Nature Conservation department of the South African Government. Officers visit the reserve, and every reserve housing wild animals regularly and everything done there has to abide by their rules/ regulations.

What conservation organisation is overseeing it?

Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE) is responsible for protecting, conserving and improving the South African environment and natural resources.

How does bringing two giraffes to this reserve contribute to giraffe conservation beyond improving the quality of life of one giraffe?

As the quest for conservation goes on across South Africa, it’s become clear that the population of giraffes isn’t constant across the country with some areas having too many and other areas too few. By relocating giraffes across wild life reserves the eco system is preserved.

Zenda has a new male friend. ❤️
Our new giraffe has arrived! Zenda's first reaction was a mixture of excitement and a little confusion, but she is already beginning to show him the ropes. We’re keeping our distance and giving him all the time and space he needs, but we’re already seeing glimpses of an inquisitive young boy who seems increasingly curious about these strange humans Zenda is so comfortable around.
And Zenda is being the perfect host. She’s confidently leading the way and showing him that there’s nothing here to fear.
